July 30, 2026 — The ACLU of Iowa has released a 37-page report that documents the growing problems of School Resource Officers (SROs) in Iowa and how instead of keeping students truly safe, they actually impose certain harms upon students, especially Black students and students with disabilities.
The report is based on open records requests sent to dozens of schools and local law enforcement and federal data each school is required to submit.
The report also points to poor oversight of SRO programs, lack of parental notification and potential violation of student rights, record-keeping that may violate contracts and federal law, and specific cases of SRO overreach with Iowa students as young as 6.
