The following statement can be attributed to ACLU of Iowa Executive Director Mark Stringer.
"We are ecstatic that HJR 14 passed out of the Senate Judiciary Committee today. Iowa is now one step closer to no longer being the only state left in the country that permanently strips people with a felony conviction of their eligibility to vote.
"Iowa's disenfranchisement law has been especially devastating to Black communities across Iowa, where one in 10 Black adults cannot vote because of a felony conviction. This means entire communities have a reduced voice in our government and it perpetuates the problems of a deeply flawed criminal justice system.
"We will continue the work to right this wrong and urge the full Senate to pass HJR 14 to keep the progress going and to permanently fix this longstanding problem."
