About Us

The ACLU of Iowa fights to uphold the rights of everyone, regardless of who they are or what they believe.

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Iowa is a private, non-partisan organization that was founded in 1935. As a state affiliate of the national ACLU, we fight to advance civil liberties and uphold the Iowa and U.S. Constitutions.

We work in the streets, the courts, and the statehouse to uphold the rights of everyone, regardless of who they are or what they believe—from atheists to devout Christians, from labor unions to businesspeople, and more.

Key issues we work on include:

  • Freedom of speech, expression, and the press
  • LGBTQ rights
  • Reproductive freedom
  • Immigrant rights
  • Racial justice
  • Student rights
  • Personal privacy and security
  • Voting rights
  • Open government and records
  • Religious freedom and separation of church and state
  • Women's rights
  • Criminal justice reform
  • Disability rights
