The media plays an important role in ensuring accountability and transparency by government officials.
Contact your local newspaper or TV news station and urge them to report on COVID-19 conditions in local prisons and jails. Here's how:
- If you're unsure of who to contact, use your web browser (Google is one example) to find the website of the newspaper or TV station. They should list the best contact for media coverage or a news tip.
- Share with the media outlet the ACLU of Iowa letter and press release.
- Ask them specifically to start reporting on the number of confirmed and suspected cases of COVID-19 in local jails or correctional facilities.
- Ask them specifically to start reporting on how many people have been quarantined in those facilities, and if so, under what conditions. Solitary confinement facilities is not acceptable for medical quarantining.
