The Mannheimer Student Video Contest
Each year, the ACLU of Iowa sponsors a middle- and high-school student video contest where students make a 3-10 minute film about a civil liberty that matters to them. Named after the late Robert Mannheimer, a Des Moines lawyer and long-time supporter of the ACLU and civil liberties, the goal is to get youth thinking about the importance of civil liberties in their lives. The winner receives a cash prize of $500.
Possible topics could include:
- Free speech
- Free expression
- LGBT issues
- Racial justice
- Religious freedom
- Women’s rights
- Privacy issues
For more ideas on civil liberties out the list on the national ACLU web site.
The winner will receive a cash prize of $500. The deadline for the 2013 contest has yet to be determined, but is usually in March or April.

"... I'm just 15, but I already have a passion for civil rights. I have two lesbian moms, but I didn’t start caring about civil rights until this school year. I like to think my passion for equality is shared by all ACLU members."
